Buzzfeed and Trump's Genius Unintentional PR Deal (2016)

"We don't run cigarette ads because they are hazardous to our health, and we won't accept Trump ads for the exact same reason." Words from Buzzfeed CEO Jonah Peretti's letter announcing the company's decision to ban Donald Trump ads as a stand against bigotry and hatred. But rest assured, campaign coverage will continue as usual. How convenient. I wouldn't have given much thought about this “necessary protection of company morale in consideration of Muslim and female employees”/PR move. Except that I'm reading about it on other media outlets which frame it as some heroic stand or about how they're  baffled by their news biz counterpart's rejection of the campaign's  $1.3 million. Really? How are these journalists so naive? Buzzfeed made $46 million just in the first half of last year, and will probably make just as much this year from all the Trump stories they will continue to run. And their continued coverage of his campaign is  going to add onto his success,  probably even more than any ad (which honestly would look out of place on Buzzfeed's site). If they really want to hurt his campaign, they should stop running mindless stories about  Mark Cuban's thoughts on Trump's net worth or Trump's relationship advice for Robert Pattison. But they will continue to, because it pays to be nonsensical.
